Met at the airport by your driver, you’ll be transferred at your hotel in the centre of town.
Shkodra, on the border with Montenegro and home to Catholic, Orthodox, Muslim and Bektashi monuments, is symbolic of Albania’s national harmony between its various coexisting religions in Albania. The city’s Marubi library houses the largest collection of photos in the Balkans.
Head into the splendid Valbona Valley and cross Lake Komani – a journey comparable to the Norwegian fjords. In the evening, get to know the locals by sharing dinner with them and staying overnight in a local guesthouse.
Cross the border into Kosovo and stop at the Decan monastery, a place where Romanesque architecture meets the artistic patterns of the Bysantine world (UNESCO protected). Then visit the small city of Prizren, where in 1878 300 Albanian representatives gather to fight against the Ottoman invasion and home to rich architectural heritage.
Kruja, hometown of Albania’s national hero, Skanderberg, is your next stop. Learn about the great leader, as well as local culture, at the Skanderberg museum. Explore the old market’s stalls in a charming square of cobbled streets, perfect for souvenirs! In the afternoon, the Tavern of the Adriatic awaits in Durres. You could visit the old amphitheater as well as the city’s archaeological museum.
Elbasan, once a prosperous city known for its handicrafts, has retained its historical center and cobbled streets. You’ll see its ancient fortress and beautiful houses, as well as one of Albania’s oldest mosques that belies the country’s subjugation to Ottoman rule. Continue to Tushemisht, a small village on the shore of Lake Ohrid. The area’s rich and varied nature secured it UNESCO protection in 1979. The lake and mountains on the horizon offer a breathtaking view!
Once a very developed city, Voskopoja is now a charming small village of 500 habitants. In the middle of its cobbled streets, discover its beautiful Orthodox churches.
We will then visit the town of Korca. Nicknamed the “little Paris of Albania”, it is a city of art, love and romanticism. Unravel history at its medieval museum (home to a great collection of Orthodox icons), the French WWII cemetery, the Orthodox Cathedral.
Explore the canyons of Langarica before visiting Permet, “the city of flowers” (also famous for its exquisite cuisine). Move on to the UNESCO city of Gjirokastra. Full of distinctive districts and shaded terraces, its main sites are the museum and citadel which will take us back in time through the history of Albania. The city has retained its characteristic “old Albanian houses” architecture and you’ll stay overnight in one of those that has been converted into a hotel.
Butrint, on the Ionian Coast, is an ancient Greek city on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Discover its historic landmarks before venturing on to the coastal city of Saranda for a delicious seafood meal on the beach as the sun sets. ©
Enjoy a coffee in Qeparo with a magnificent view over the Riviera’s beaches as you make your way to the Llogara National Park. After a short hike in the nature, continue towards Vlora, where Albania’s independence was declared in 1912.
Apollonia is Albania’s largest Ancient Greek archaeological site, home to a former Bouleterion, Odeon, library, and theatre. Afterwards, visit Ardenica’s Orthodox monastery (the final one still operating in Albania), whose frescoes attract many visitors each year. From there you can enjoy spectacular views of the fields to the sea before continuing to Berat.
Berat, UNESCO protected and known as “the city of 1,000 windows”, charms visitors with its white houses and steep streets on a special promenade. Visit its castle, many mosques and two museums.Later, return to Tirana and visit its main monuments such as the National Museum, the Skanderberg statue, and mosque of Et’hemBey – all located on the main square.
